Happy Cinco de Mayo!!!

by UnknownMami on May 5, 2010

Feliz Cinco de Mayo, my friends. For those of you that do not know, I want to make it clear that Cinco de Mayo is not Mexican Independence Day, that would be the 16th of September. Cinco the Mayo is primarily celebrated in the US and Puebla, Mexico as the birthday of Mayonnaise. Mayo, glorious Mayo!

Mayonnaise was introduced to the United States on May 5th,  1862 when a native of Puebla visiting relatives in the US whipped up a batch and was walking down the street with a bowl of mayo and bumped into an American eating a dry tuna sandwich. The subsequent exchange went something like this:

Man from Mexico: Señor you got your tuna fish sandwich in my mayonnaise.
Man from U.S.: Well, you got your mayo-huh? in my tuna fish sandwich.

At this point they both decided to sample the mixture after which they both excitedly exclaim:

“Two great tastes that go great together!”

Okay, so maybe that’s not really what Cinco de Mayo is about. If you’d like to know the real background click HERE. Regardless, Happy Cinco de Mayo to you and yours.

I hope you know I’m kidding.

Happy Cinco de Mayo to you too. I think this calls for a cerveza, preferably a Corona with a lime in it. It may not cure our ills, but it's a start.

Why can't we just go with your meaning? I like it. A lot.

auntof14 May 5, 2010 at 4:38 pm

MAYONNAISE?! Well, I guess that explains the Mayo!!!! Ha ha ha ha I don't know why this makes me giggle.

I made Diablo dip for my office. We're having a grand big old Cinco De Mayo potluck. Somebody made chicken arroyo which smells very good and I am especially looking forward to it, because that somebody was special enough to make a separate batch for me… and only me… without the onions!!! (allegic) Her kindness touches me.

I always thought Cinco De Mayo was just the fifth of May. Which I suppse it is, but that mayonnaise history was fun!

auntof14 May 5, 2010 at 4:40 pm

You're brilliant. Okay, I almost shared with people that I am picking strawberries with the boys today instead of drinking margaritas as my Cinco de Mayo celebration. Then, I realized that somebody would think I was being racist, which is totally not it at all. I would rather be drinking margaritas, but since taking the boys to the bar is frowned upon, we're going to the berry patch instead.

Because berries are also delicious.

Sigh. I'm afraid there is no winning this. This comment never happened.

Happy Mayo Day to you too! :)

Enjoy your day. In San Diego this day was celebrated everywhere. Lots of places to go and enjoy the music and colorful costumes and dancing. And of course amazing Mexican food. Hubby and I are just making our own today!

Oh my goodness! I have no idea what Cinco De Mayo is so I was falling for your story. Everyone is blogging about this but obviously this is not celebrated here in Wisconsin. I am off to read your link so I can see what this really is all about. Thanks for the laugh.

lisleman May 5, 2010 at 11:49 pm

I put a comment up on your last post about today. But since now you have a post dedicated to the day, I'll just repeat it here.

I was thinking about Cinco de Mayo and Arizona and I found this.
The Phoenix Suns will wear “Los Suns” on their jerseys in Game 2 of the Western Conference semifinals on Wednesday night, owner Robert Sarver said, “to honor our Latino community and the diversity of our league, the state of Arizona, and our nation.”

the clip is mostly about the games but towards the end the player talks about his view of the AZ law.

Cheeseboy May 6, 2010 at 5:04 am

I had no idea that Mayo came from Mexico! It seems like such an Americanized item.

And Mami – I have no idea how you do it, but your comments are always the most entertaining and spot on of all comments. And that is true for every blog I see you comment on.
