Feliz Cinco de Mayo, my friends. For those of you that do not know, I want to make it clear that Cinco de Mayo is not Mexican Independence Day, that would be the 16th of September. Cinco the Mayo is primarily celebrated in the US and Puebla, Mexico as the birthday of Mayonnaise. Mayo, glorious Mayo!
Mayonnaise was introduced to the United States on May 5th, 1862 when a native of Puebla visiting relatives in the US whipped up a batch and was walking down the street with a bowl of mayo and bumped into an American eating a dry tuna sandwich. The subsequent exchange went something like this:
Man from Mexico: Señor you got your tuna fish sandwich in my mayonnaise.
Man from U.S.: Well, you got your mayo-huh? in my tuna fish sandwich.
At this point they both decided to sample the mixture after which they both excitedly exclaim:
Okay, so maybe that’s not really what Cinco de Mayo is about. If you’d like to know the real background click HERE. Regardless, Happy Cinco de Mayo to you and yours.
I hope you know I’m kidding.
