All Hallow’s Eve

by UnknownMami on October 31, 2011

This evening will find the Unknowns dressed as a chicken

or a lady bug,

(She is leaning toward chicken.)

a flower,

a masked wrestler,

and Unknown Papi has decided not to dress up and just go as himself…

Have a happy and safe Halloween!

Fragmented Fridays

by UnknownMami on October 28, 2011

We say we that Columbus discovered America and Newton discovered gravity, as though America and gravity weren’t there until Columbus and Newton got wind of them. -Susana Kaysen, Girl, Interrupted

When I got my new DSLR camera, I bought Photoshop Elements 9. I promptly installed it on my computer and proceeded to do absolutely nothing with it because I just don’t have the time to learn it and it certainly isn’t intuitive as far as I’m concerned. All of the pictures that I share on this blog are for the most part, straight out of the camera. This week I finally made some time to learn a little.

I wanted a new picture for my Friday Fortune Cookie segment because the image I’ve been using is from clip art and well, I’d rather use my own. Here’s the picture I started with:

Yup, those are my toes at the bottom of the frame. All in all not a very good picture. I mean unless you are into eating fortune cookies off of plates on backyard patios with tantalizing toes near by. Here’s what I ended up with after playing around with Elements…

Way better, right? I mean I know I don’t have mad Photoshop skills yet, but it’s a start. Oh and you’ll be seeing that picture again at the end of the post.

We watched the movie Cyrus and I really liked it. It’s the first movie in awhile that I was really into. It’s weird, quirky, amusing, and at times uncomfortable. Just my style.

And now your Friday Fortune Cookie
(don’t forget to add “in bed” at the end, if you are so inclined):

The secret of getting ahead is getting started.

Miss Unlimited

by UnknownMami on October 27, 2011

Growing up female in a man’s world is tough. At least it was tough for me and I’m pretty sure I’m not alone. So many of the messages you get when growing up female are not empowering, that’s why I was thrilled when Aiming Low asked me to write for one of their newly launched channels: Miss Unlimited.

Miss Unlimited is about helping young women and women in the making feel unlimited about the future. Please stop by and read A Conversation with my Inner Critic, my first contribution to this wonderful channel. I want my daughters and all daughters to feel unlimited.

El Qué Dirán

October 25, 2011

This post was inspired by Put Pie, my 3-year-old, and her love of wearing mismatched socks. It’s a fashion choice for her, it makes her happy and a little more excited about her day. I think it’s cute, but the other day El Qué Dirán tried to contaminate Put Pie via me. For those of you [...]

Mami the Magician

October 24, 2011

Thanks to Plum Organics for sponsoring my post about tips for baby feeding magic. What if you let baby choose what’s for dinner? Check out their cute “Quest for Yum!” video and see what happens! No one told me that being a magician would be one of the requirements of Mami-hood, that I would [...]

Arroz con Leche: #Positivismo in a Bowl

October 21, 2011

The other day I was chatting with my buddy and Positivity Guru, Simón Felix (better known as the “Master of the glass full), about how we incorporate milk into our diet. He tends to like his milk straight-up and has even been known to double fist (or double elevate) his glasses. Me, I prefer my [...]

Fragmented Fridays

October 20, 2011

I’m writing this on Thursday 10/20. I live in San Francisco and we’ve had 2 earthquakes today. One was a 4.0 and the second was a 3.9. I’d like to believe that it is just the earth relieving some pressure. Keep us in your thoughts. There have been so many natural disaster occurring lately, it’s [...]
