A Drink Before Bed #Positivismo

by UnknownMami on November 30, 2011

For as long as I can remember, I have had difficulty falling asleep. It doesn’t matter how tired I am, I am not one of those people whose head hits the pillow and nods off within 5 minutes. No, that would be my husband. Argh, he drives me crazy saying that he’s not sleepy and then falling asleep instantly, but I digress.

Sleep becomes much easier if I follow a few routines. Regular exercise is key. Exercise is as close to magic as you will get for your health, it’s just good for so many things. I don’t exercise right before bed though, that would be too stimulating. I also don’t watch the news right before bed. That would keep me up half the night.  Before bed I like to relax by writing and having drink. No, not the alcoholic kind because those may help you fall asleep initially, but they are not helpful in staying asleep. I like to drink a glass of milk (I like to have cookies with the milk, but I don’t think those help me sleep).

I always thought that milk helping you sleep was an old wives tale or one of my nana’s crazy cures (a lot of which come to find out are not so crazy at all), but apparently the proteins in milk are good for your hair, your muscles, and they help you sleep. I don’t know if the milk helps me sleep because of the protein or if it is psychosomatic, but to be honest I don’t really care…I’m just happy to sleep.

In a way it’s funny that I use milk to help me fall asleep because I also use it to help me way up. Every morning I look forward to starting my day with a cup of cafe con leche. I like my coffee to be about the same color as my paper bag.

Open Email to Google

by UnknownMami on November 29, 2011

Dear Google,

My head is spinning. You are going through so many changes, which means that by default I will be going through so many changes.

I have to tell you that I’m freaking out a bit about the pending disconnection of Google Friend Connect for non-Blogger blogs. I would love more information about how that is going to work.

You recommend having the people that follow my blog (a non-Blogger blog) follow me on google+ and add me to their circles. Wish me luck getting over 700 people to do that especially since a bunch of them aren’t on google+. I guess that’s part of the point, to get more people on google+, right? Okay, I get how that works for the supposed social aspects of GFC, but here’s what I’m freaking out about and I can’t seem to find an answer: most of the people that follow me via GFC do not do it for the social components, they do it as a way to subscribe to my feed in their Blogger dashboard or in their Google Reader.

So riddle me this Google riddlers, come March 2012, will my feed disappear from Blogger dashboards and Google Readers of people who follow me via GFC? Oh, I hope you say it ain’t so. Please say you are not punishing me for not being on Blogger. Just ’cause I’m not on Blogger doesn’t mean I’m not up to my neck in Google products.

At this point, I can’t even have my blog feed automatically publish to google+. I’m busy Google, I have two small kids and adding one more step to my online existence might not seem like much, but my Mami-brain will certainly forget.

So tell me, will my feed disappear from over 700 Blogger dashboards and readers?

I realize that you are busy and can not respond to every single query, but I know I’m not the only one who feels like they’ve been left hanging.

Google, I’m trying to be patient with all the changes and believe that they will all work out for the better. I’ve been a loyal googler for as long as the internet can remember, I’ve stood by you and helped turned you into a verb that gets used in conversations, please don’t leave me hanging.

You’ve been invaluable in helping me find online content, please help me find the answer to this question.

Virtually yours,

Unknown Mami

P.S. I am posting this as an open letter on my blog, my sad, worried, non-Blogger blog.

My Wish Came True and So Could Yours {Giveaway}

by UnknownMami on November 29, 2011

The internet is a magical wonderland. You encounter all kinds of mythical creatures from trolls to fairies. The internet trolls are not pleasant, but fortunately there are kindhearted internet fairies that make up for the cruelness of the trolls.

The last time I believed in fairies, I was putting a tooth under my pillow. It’s been a while, but my faith has been restored thanks to The Fairy Hobmother. On my journeys through cyberspace I’ve heard tales of The Fairy Hobmother and I was skeptical to say the least. Why would this fairy go around the internet granting wishes? I would have thought the whole thing was a sham if it wasn’t for the fact that bloggers I trust were being granted wishes and posting about it.

I figured there was nothing to lose so when I read a post at Nibbles & Feasts where the Fairy Hobmother had granted the author a food processor, I went for it and made a wish. I was told to wish for a kitchen appliance in the comments section and this is what I wrote…

Dear Fairy Hobmother, I would love an immersion blender.

Then one early morning while I slept The Fairy Hobmother sent me an email and asked me if I would like this immersion blender:

Of course, I said: YES!

In exchange for this immersion blender instead of giving her a tooth, which I can not spare, she asked that I help spread the word about her by telling you about her adventures in wish granting. So now you know, The Fairy Hobmother is real and if you make a wish for an appliance in my comments section she just might grant your wish. If she does, please be sure to tell me.

Go ahead, make a wish, you have nothing to lose and perhaps a kitchen appliance to gain.

Google Friend Disconnect

by UnknownMami on November 28, 2011

Google has announced that it is discontinuing Google Friend Connect for non-Blogger blogs come March of 2012.

WHAT THE FUNK!

Over 700 of you follow this blog via GFC and I’m getting the shakes thinking my feed will disappear from your dashboards or readers. It will be a sad and lonely blog without you. So if you are inclined to give gifts during the holiday season or just want to keep following this blog because the love affair is mutual, will you please consider following via my RSS feed and pehaps follow this blog’s google+ page as well?

I will gladly return the favor. You can leave me your info in the comments. Thank you.

Meyer Lemon Pie

November 28, 2011

Never go to the supermarket hungry. I did and I came home with a premade pie crust and then had to figure out what to do with it. I knew I had Eagle Brand Sweetened Condensed Milk that I could use and decided to pair it with Meyer lemons from our backyard. The results were [...]

Sundays In My City

November 26, 2011

San Francisco is the birthplace of the Mission-style burrito. Named after the Mission District in San Francisco. What makes it Mission-style? The size. It is roughly the size of your forearm. If it’s not ginormous, then it is not a Mission-style burrito. I showed you mine, now show me yours. Share your [...]

Fragmented Fridays

November 25, 2011

I went computer-free for the Thanksgiving day holiday. I spend quite a bit of time on the computer and I have to steal that time away in bits and pieces, but on the holidays I don’t want to be distracted. I want my family to know that I am choosing them and the present moment [...]

Might As Well Join Them

November 22, 2011

My home no longer belongs to me. There are creatures not made by nature everywhere I see. Sure they’re delightful and for the most part I think they’re okay, but sometimes I wish they would just stay put away. It seems that no matter how I try they will always be freed from their nice [...]
