My mother had a conversation with me a long time ago. I can’t pretend to remember exactly how it went, but she said that she had done her best to raise me with a sense of arrogance. The word “arrogance” just didn’t sit well with me so I asked her to explain. She went on to say that she wanted me to be proud and secure in who I am, not to shrink from challenges, to know my worth. And then I got it. What I have, I would not call arrogance, what I have I call orgullo. I am orgullosa and proud of it (no, it’s not redundant if you say it in two languages).

The power of community has come to mean so much to me. For most of my life I have been a bit of a loner. It wasn’t until I started blogging and others reached out to me that I realized that what I can accomplish alone is nothing in comparison to what I can accomplish with the help of a community. Much of my blogging success, no ALL of my blogging success has come about through the power of community. The most powerful online community that I am a part of happens to be composed of Latina bloggers. They are amazing, supportive, and as invested in my success as I am in theirs.
