DIY vases out of cans and jars

I’m not gonna lie to you, I may be a little smitten with these DIY painted vases I recently made out of a can, a mason jar, and an empty mayonnaise container. I made them in anticipation of all the Valentine’s Day flowers I’ll surely be getting. Ha!

No, really, the truth is that I am blessed to have a hubby who brings flowers home on a regular basis and I never have enough vases to put them in, so I thought it was time to make some.

If you are interested in making your own DIY vases, it’s super easy. Check it out!

Supplies you will need:

  • Empty and clean containers of your choice such as cans or jars (make sure you take off all the labels and sticky gunk)
  • Paint that you can use on glass/metal (I used Valspar tintable chalkboard paint in a pinkish shade)
  • A sponge brush
  • Sharpie marker (optional)
  • A glue gun with glue (optional)
  • FrogTape (optional)
One of the vases I made has the word “amor” on it in 3D. You can write whatever you like on a jar before you paint it with a glue gun, to give it a personal touch. I used a Sharpie pen to write my word on the jar and then I went over the writing with glue from my hot glue gun. Once the glue was completely cool and dry, I painted the outside of the jar as many times as it took for me to be satisfied, waiting for the paint to dry between layers so I didn’t get a goopy mess.

It ended up being pretty thick, so I only needed to do this once. It took a couple of days for the paint to fully dry. Once it was done, I screwed the band back on the jar without the lid so that it would have the silver contrast, but still be open on top to hold flowers.

The vase made out of an empty tin can got gussied up with a heart with the help of FrogTape. I cut out a heart shape from the Frog tape and adhered it to the can. Once that was done, I painted the can with as many coats as it took for me to like the way it looked. Again, I waited for the paint to dry between coats. Once all the paint was dry, I carefully remove the heart shaped FrogTape to reveal the silver heart beneath the paint.

Now, I have these three adorable vases.

I like them all, but I have to say my favorite is the one that says, amor. I am going to make some more of these with different words and with spray paint instead of chalkboard paint.

I love that shade of pink! What a great idea! I use mason jars as vases anyway…but was too lazy to pretty them up. I paint pots instead. :D Beautiful. Particularly liked the idea of leaving the band behind for the contrast!
